Chore Chart

  I can't believe it's almost September already! It is absolutely incredible how fast time has flown by. This year marks my first year homeschooling both of my children. I have (daily) been looking on Pinterest trying to find ideas on staying organized and motivated. There are so many ideas on there, I just had to find something that wouldn't cost me extra money to make since we are also making a big push on renovations on the house this fall (Oh me and my crazy life). What I ended up finding in my basement was an unused magnetic board and magnets that I had acquired from Ikea some years back. Then I found some electrical tape, acrylic paint, and normal school glue.

  Let the creative process begin!

  I began by using the tape to make different sections on the metal board. Then I used a pencil to roughly write in the names and headings of the columns. I traced the pencil marks with the paint and while it dried I searched online for some clipart.  I printed them off, cut them out, and glued them on the magnets. And voila!

My kids are very excited about the new chore chart. The first day they were so quick to finish their chores. As we go I might change the size of the magnets and add more chores. But for now this works. :)

Pumpkin pie (from scratch!)

Pumpkin purée;

3 small baking pumpkins. Take the stems off and remove all the seeds. Cut in half and place cut side down on pan. Coat skin with olive oil. Bake at 325° for 1hr. When done scoop out the inside and purée in a food processor. 

Pie crust (start this while your pumpkin is baking):

     2 1/2 cups flour

     1/2 cup cold water

     1 cup cubed cold butter

Mix it all together with a dough hook. And separate into 3 equal portions. Wrap in Saran Wrap and place into fridge to chill until your done making the filling. After the filling is done... Roll out on a flowered surface. Use the leftover dough to make something pretty for the tops. 😊

Filling (makes 3 9"pies)

• 4 cups of pumpkin puree
• 300 ml. can of evaporated milk
• 3/4 honey
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 5 eggs 
• 4 teaspoons cinnamon
• 2 teaspoon ginger
• 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon cloves
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Directions

1. Mix sugars, salt, spices, lemon into large bowl.  Beat in eggs then pumpkin puree.  Finally add the evaporated milk and whisk until thoroughly combined.
2. Pour mixture into chilled pie shell and make at 425F for 15 minutes.  After 15 minutes reduce temperature to 350F.  Bake 45-50 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
3. Cool on a wire rack for 2 hours
4. Note: If you are lacking some of the spices above…you can replace the spices above with pumpkin pie spice.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's my super kids!

I have been sewing and sewing a lot last year... But it was mostly for other people. Now that the holidays are over and our family is all rested up from various sicknesses, I can get back to sewing. Last year while I was looking on Pinterest, I came across a bunch of awesome super hero capes. My son J is constantly asking me to safety pin a blanket together so he can be superman. I decided today would be the last day... Time to make him a real super hero cape. 

I have been sewing and sewing a lot last year... But it was mostly for other people. Now that the holidays are over and our family is all rested up from various sicknesses, I can get back to sewing. Last year while I was looking on Pinterest, I came across a bunch of awesome super hero capes. My son J is constantly asking me to safety pin a blanket together so he can be superman. A farmer or an astronoght?

Recently I have been asked if I'd like to be a vendor at an event my church is putting on in September. I agreed... So that means I need to get to work. From one project to the next... :) 

I started rummaging and found a couple backpacks already cut out just waiting for me to add an appliqué and sew them up.  

Figuring what to put on the fronts sometimes takes me a bit to dream up. However, these two were pretty easy. And when they come together they look pretty awesome.

Even had a bit of fun quilting the bottom of the rocket ship bag. :) I'm hoping to get some more little girl backpacks. But we will have to see... Last week I made a really cute doll for my daughter... And I've been dying to make more... So we will just have to see. ;)

Clothes for my babies.

Spring has come and now almost gone... We have been busy in the yard; filling holes, sowing grass seed, and spreading mulch. It's starting to look good around here all thanks to my awesome hubby. :D 

The warm sun has been heating up our small town and its forced me to dive into the kids closets for some cooler clothes for them to ware. Finding very little in their closets for the summer I dove into my fabric bins and started creating. 

Shorts, dresses, and little outfits. Oh! I'm having so much fun!

Jefferson bag update #3

Yes, I know... It's been a while since I've posted on here... I've been working on my kids wardrobe (which I'll be putting in another post). Many of my friends are probably wondering how the fundraiser for the Jefferson's adoption went. With your help we have been able to raise $260.00 for them. Yaya! I'm pretty happy with the response. There are still 4 more bags available if anyone would still would like to contribute. Leave a comment below or email me: bjsuniquedesigns@gmail.com. 
They are $25 each. Each bag is made out of heavy cotton/duck material, and is fully lined. They all feature a large pocket on the front of the bag.
